causes of conflict in srilanka.
-university admission (MOST IMPORTANT)
fixed number of places are reserved for the sinhalese, therefore tamils are not happy.
tamils have to score higher to get into the same courses.
it leads to unhappinessssss, therefore, help the LTTE to go against the government.
fight fight fight. VIOLENCE.

most important, cos it's a stepping stone to get good jobs, and hold an important position in the government service, without good education, they cant do anything, and killed their only hope to improve their lives in sri lanka.

-citizenship rights (LEAST IMPORTANT)
in 1948, sri lanka only granted citizenship to those who were born there of their grandfathers and fathers were born there.
indian tamils were found stateless.
1964, india tried to help those who were stateless, and the problem was solved PROPERLY in 2003 with the grant of citizenship to persons of indian origin bill.
this led to tamils being unhappy, cos they contributed so much, but was not given citizenship. leading to the tamils supporting the LTTE to go against the government.
least important, cos only a small population were affected, and the problem has already been solved with the grant of citizenship to persons of indian origin bill (i think this was the bill).

-resettlement of population
some policy made to the sinhalese peasants to provide land for them, so they were moved into central and tamil areas.
tamils were not happy, cos the peasants were not the only ones that moved in. buddhist monks and sri lankan army, mainly made up of sinhalese, moved in as well.
SINHALESE OCCUPIEDD THEIR LAND
they were unhappy, cos they had to fight for land, and businesses, when it comes to selling products. the tamils also thought that they were forced to live with them, and created resentment.

-jobs in government service
before sri lanka gained independence, they used english with admin work; indian tamils were better with their languages, thus held higher positions in the government services.
sinhalese not happy cos the minority had more say, they changed their administrative language to sinhalese under the official language act.
tamils were given 3years to learn the language or be dismissed.
they had peaceful prostest, but got disrupted, thus VIOLENCE! -> help LTTE to go against the government.
