Lack of resource

Japan needed more raw materials.
Japan’s population was growing, and needed more land for living and growing crops.
They depended on trade with the US.
When there was great depression, the economy in japan fell, cos they depended a lot on the US trade for silk.

Therefore, they decided to conqueror countries around them that had raw material, such as china.

China cos of the raw material and their government wasn’t strong at that time. They decided take advantage of the situation.

Britain supported china, therefore offended the Japanese. And the jap were not happy with the western countries.

Not enough resources + militarism = bomb pearl harbour + invasion of china.


Fear of colonization

Japanese were afraid to be colonised by the western powers.
They wanted to become the most powerful nation and control the world. (TSK)

They believed in strong use of forces.
They didn’t believe in friendly relationships with the western countries. (general was forced to resign cos he was on friendly terms with the western countries)
Weak leadership -> military was ruling. (and they believed in violence)

Protectionism

The exports and imports of Japanese goods have heavy taxes -> people don’t buy them cos it’s expensive.

Trade dropped by 2/3

Everything to japan’s advantage.

China
Refused to trade. (expensive)
Japan wanted to conqueror china, but they are too big.
China resisted attack -> war. More resources and money are drained.

Japan was forced to trade with the west
They needed oil from USA
